Cable Security Gates Forth Road Bridge

Cable Security Gates Forth Road Bridge

To prevent unauthorised access to the Forth Road Bridge suspension cables, new security gates were to be erected onto the cables in eight locations on the bridge.  Millar Callaghan were awarded the contract for these works by BEAR Scotland on behalf of Transport Scotland.

Firstly, our engineers attended site to survey each gate location, to allow detailed fabrication drawings to be produced and presented to the client for approval.

On receiving approval of the drawings, our workshop went into full production on the security gates. Each gate was custom made for each of the 8 locations, to ensure a secure fit to the existing suspension cables. On completion of the fabrication, each gate and side panel were fitted with prison-grade anti-climb, high security mesh. The gates and side panels were sent for shotblasting, galvanising and finally powder coating, to ensure that they would match the colour of the existing bridge.

Prior to the gates being delivered to site, a trial lift was carried out in our Irvine yard to make sure that all slinging and rigging equipment was correctly set. This would ensure that the gates and side panels would be safely and efficiently installed on site. The gate and panels were then delivered to site and fully assembled at ground level, then installed with a crane as one unit.

Wind speeds were constantly monitored as the crane lifted the gates into position, to be secured to the suspension cable by Millar Callaghan engineers who were located in cherry pickers and on the cable itself. On completion of the installation, a full quality package was presented to the client.
