Dalmuir Railway Station Replacement Footbridge
To comply with current legislation and to meet DDA standards, the existing railway bridge at Dalmuir Station needed to be replaced with a new fully enclosed bridge, complete with a lift shaft at each of the three platforms.
This 120 tonne structure was fabricated in our Irvine workshop. Once the fabrication was complete and the welds had been MPI and ultrasonically tested, a full assembly of the bridge and lift shafts was carried out in our yard. As we only had 30 hours on site, spread over 6 Saturday nightshifts, to install the new bridge, lift shafts, staircases and to also remove the existing bridge, it was essential to carry out this trial build to ensure that there would be no delays or complications on site. When the trial assembly was complete all the new steel work was stripped down and painted to a high railway specification.
Due to the limited working area on site, the 500 tonne crane and materials had to be delivered to site in the order in which they were being installed. The pedestrian area local to the station was cordoned off to the public to allow the installation activities to proceed. This area had to be completely cleared after each night shift and handed back to the public. On the final night shift the existing bridge was removed. This caused some of the platform to be inaccessible until the last section of bridge was installed on the same night. Failure to complete this work over the 5-hour window would have resulted in the station being unusable by the public. With the bridge now installed, the cladding, flashing and electrical work was carried out to complete the structure.
This contract was successfully carried out to programme, within budget and with no disruption to the public or the railway service.
