Glasgow Central Station Refurbishment

Glasgow Central Station Refurbishment

The major refurbishment and upgrading of the Central Bar and Bonopartes restaurant at Glasgow Central Station in 2016 also involved the building of a new commercial unit above some of the existing retail outlets.

On winning the contract to fabricate and install the steelwork for the new commercial unit, we carried out a full site survey of the existing roof levels of the retail units. Having identified the support columns on the existing retail units, we submitted fabrication drawings and calculations to the client showing the new structure connecting to the retail unit below.

During the drawing review period, our site team worked through the night for a few weeks removing the existing steelwork from the central stairwell to accommodate the new steelwork and create an access in the floor area for a new lift shaft.  On acceptance of our drawings and calculations, our fabrication department went in to full production of the new steelwork.  When the steelwork was completed a full trial assembly was carried out at our Irvine workshop. All welding was then MPI and ultrasonically tested to ensure full compliance with the client’s specifications. The steelwork was then shot blasted and painted with a minimum 1-hour fireproof paint system before arriving on site.   All steelwork was delivered to site and installed onto the roof area during nightshifts.  This ensured minimum disruption to the public or the rail service.  Additional fire escapes and lift shafts were installed to ensure that the new venue was accessible to wheelchairs and prams.
