Queensferry Crossing Internal Access Platforms

Queensferry Crossing Internal Access Platforms

Millar Callaghan were awarded the contract to fabricate over 850 tonne of steel platforms, lift shafts and staircases to provide access inside each of the three 207-meter-high concrete towers of the UK’s highest bridge, The New Queensferry Crossing.

Due to the conical shape of the towers each platform level decreases in diameter as it increases in height. Each platform level was fabricated and fully assembled in our Irvine workshop before being sent for shotblasting and galvanised to 140 microns. To ensure full traceability and ease of installation, every component for each level was individually tagged and delivered to site.

Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown, along with representatives from the client, visited our Irvine workshop to witness the fabrication work being carried out to the highest European standards.

As the concrete was being poured for each level of the tower construction, the new steel platforms were being installed a few levels below. This continued throughout the tower construction which resulted in the final sections of steelwork being installed only a few weeks after the concrete pour on the towers had been completed.
