SSUDA Forth Road Bridge
After a successful trial in 2016 to improve the existing Self Suspended Under Deck Access (SSUDA) on the Forth Road Bridge, it was decided that the remaining platforms should be replaced and brought up to the same standard. The SSUDA platforms provide maintenance access to the underside of the Forth Road Bridge. This access is provided by seven separate walkways that run the full length of the bridge and laid end to end would total over 10km long.
After successfully completing the trial, Millar Callaghan were awarded the first three phases of the main replacement works. Whilst our fabrication workshop was manufacturing the new walkways and supporting steelwork, web decking, scaffolding and safety netting were being installed on site to allow the existing steelwork to be stripped and removed from site.
Before arriving on site all new steelwork was shotblasted and galvanised to a minimum of 140 microns before being installed on site. When the installation was complete, the existing structure was fully inspected and any damaged paintwork was repaired in accordance with full highway specification.
