Crossmaloof Railway Station

Crossmaloof Railway Station

A new access ramp from the main street to the station platform at Crossmaloof had been requested by Network Rail to make the station more accessible for wheelchairs and children’s pushchairs.  Millar Callaghan were awarded the contract to fabricate and install the new ramp, complete with anti-slip flooring and DDA compliant hand railings.

A full site survey was carried out by our engineers to establish the required gradient of the ramp and confirm both the height and position of the ramp supports. A full set of fabrication drawings were submitted to the client for approval before our workshop started to manufacture the structure. The ramp, supports and handrail were manufactured and fully assembled in our workshop. This ensured that the whole ramp could be installed without any complications during one nightshift at the railway.

When the fabrication and trial assembly were complete the individual components were stripped down and sent off to be galvanised and painted to the required Network Rail specification.

Due to the limited access on site, the articulated lorries transporting the materials were required to park in a local industrial estate and wait there until they were instructed to access the site to be unloaded by the crane. As there was no storage facilities or lay down areas at the site each item had to be removed from the crane in the correct order and installed directly into its location.

All the ramp sections and supports were successfully installed during the nightshift. The joins on the floor plates and the handrail sections were installed the following day to complete the structure.
