Forth Road Bridge Cable Gantries

Forth Road Bridge Cable Gantries

During a structural investigation of the Forth Road Bridge suspension cables, it was identified that some of the cable strands had corroded to breaking point. Further investigation was carried out by sending soundwaves up each individual strand to confirm that the strand ran the full length and was intact. Sample sections were also required to be taken from sections of the suspension cables.

Millar Callaghan were asked to fabricate and install five suspended access platforms to allow these inspections to be carried out.

The access platforms were fabricated in our Irvine workshop. Structural welds were MPI tested and all lifting and load bearing points were ultrasonically tested. When the platforms were completed they were suspended from a crane and fully load tested with over six tonne of weight to qualify them with a SWL for personal use.

The gantries were then delivered to site and raised up onto the cables.  The platforms were then secured in position and certified. This provided the client with the testing facility to successfully carry out their inspections.
