Glasgow Nautical College

Glasgow Nautical College

After several quality and safety meetings with the client, Millar Callaghan were awarded the contract to fabricate and install the new Nautical College and Lifeboat Launch on the River Clyde.

Fabrication drawings were submitted to the client for approval before a full scale fabrication and assembly was carried out in our Irvine yard. All material was certified to a high grade and all welding was MPI and ultrasonically inspected. After inspection, the whole structure was shot-blasted and painted to a marine specification.

New steel piles were driven into the river bed to support the new college and the new lifeboat launch. When these piles were securely bedded into the river they were levelled off by cutting to size and capping with steel top plates. These piles would eventually form the foundations for the new structures.

Due to the limited access and storage facilities on site, the completed structures were delivered to Rothesay Dock in Clydebank. From here they were loaded on to a barge and floated up the River Clyde into the town centre. A second barge containing an 80 tonne crane was used to remove the structures and locate them on to the new piles. When the new steelwork was secured to the piles the platforms and jetties were fitted out with galvanised handrail and flooring.

A full quality package was presented to the client on completion.
