Newburgh Footbridge Replacement
When Newburgh Footbridge over the Edinburgh to Perth railway line required repair and refurbishment, the option of replacing the bridge completely was considered. Due to the limited disruption this option would cause to the running of the railway and the long term benefits of having a new bridge the option to replace the bridge was accepted.
Millar Callaghan were awarded the contract to fabricate and install the new footbridge. While the new bridge was being fabricated and painted up to full Network Rail specification the old bridge was removed during a Saturday nightshift possession. When the new bridge had been painted up to full specification it was returned to our Irvine workshop were a full anti-slip coating was applied to the deck surface. The bridge was then loaded onto one of our trailers where it was escorted during the night for the 100-mile journey to site. The installation of the bridge was scheduled to be carried out on a Saturday nightshift during anther possession. The bridge was loaded from our trailer onto two track mounted trailers connected to a crane mounted Road Rail Vehicle. The bridge was transported approximately one mile down the track where it was lifted into position with the crane. The bridge was then levelled and anchored into position.
On completion of the contract Millar Callaghan’s quality department supplied the client with a complete quality package. This quality package ensured the client that all of the steelwork complied with new CE regulations and that it had been be manufactured and certified to execution class 3.
