Westburn Road Railway Bridge Strengthening

Westburn Road Railway Bridge Strengthening

Following a detailed survey of the structure, it was decided that the existing railway bridge at Westburn Road, Cambuslang would require strengthening. Due to the age and materials used on the structure, it was not practical to weld onto the existing cast steelwork. Millar Callaghan carried out a full survey of the bridge to establish which areas required strengthening and individual customised plates were fabricated for each location.

The new strengthening plates were fabricated in our Irvine workshop, whilst the existing structure was being shot-blasted and painted, ready to accept the new plates.

All site work had to be carried out during the night when there was no trains operating on the railway.  When the new web and splice plates had been installed, the fixing bolts were fully torqued. To complete the strengthening works the bridge was fully repainted.
